Welcome to the Golden Bear Track and Field Team!

We are excited to have you as part of our team this year and are looking forward to growing and learning throughout the season. We have a great staff of coaches to teach and support all athletes while helping you to achieve their goals for track, school and life.

Our Philosophy:
We believe in a team first approach to Track and Field that involves all athletes working together with one common purpose. From athletes, we expect commitment and effort and, in return, will be positive examples of those expectations to prepare our athletes for competition and for life. We will teach the values of commitment, perseverance, discipline and dedication, all of which are vital to success in any endeavor.
My philosophy is based on growing young athletes into adults that will have the tools and habits to be successful throughout their lives. This means building a culture of positive support, open communication and commitment. My hope is to guide a team that builds each other up physically, mentally and emotionally while learning positive character traits and successful habits. It is also important to me that we define winning and success for all athletes as improvement and growth rather than the need to be first place. With a positive, hardworking mentality and leadership through example, we will develop young athletes into successful adults.

Team Expectations:
1. Attitude and Character - Golden Bear Track athletes show a positive attitude, are supportive of all athletes and coaches and are open to new experiences and events.
2. Effort -Athletes show up every day ready to put in the best effort and strive to improve.
3. Communication - Athletes will follow coach on Remind to get announcements, let coaches know when and why you might miss practice and inform coaches of potential injuries or conflicts.
4. Dedication - Commit to the team and to yourself, show up daily, participate and represent Bartlett Track and Field with pride and honor.
5. Supreme sportsmanship and conduct at all practices and meets -Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Shake your opponent’s hand after an event. Congratulate others on a great jump, run or throw. Thank the officials and volunteers for their time. Cheer on your teammates and your opponents alike.

Team Rules:
1. Be on time to practice and meets ready to work - “on time” means that you are changed and beginning warm ups at 2:45, not arriving at 2:45.
**Missing one practice without communication or two or more practices with communication may exclude any athlete from being able to participate in the meet for the week.
2. No phones or headphones at practice - limited use is acceptable at meets.
3. Communicate with coaches every day.

4. Participate in fundraising to help support the team and its goals. Fundraising is also a great way to get free team gear.
5. Professional dress at school on the day of or day prior to meets. We represent our school when we compete as Golden Bear Track Athletes, our attire shows our pride in ourselves and in what we are working towards as a team.

Communication:
Communication is SO IMPORTANT. Athletes are expected to communicate with coaches on a daily basis. There is NO excuse for missing practice or an event without communicating with Coach Hrnicek in advance. Please review the practice and meet schedule with your families and plan for the season.

The best way of communicating with us is texting through the Remind App.

Text: @ahrni to 81010

Remind will be used for all team announcements and communication with individual athletes as needed. If you do not have a phone or cannot use the Remind app for some reason - see Coach Hrnicek immediately. Parents are also welcome and encouraged to use Remind.

Fundraising:
It is vital that all athletes participate in fundraising for the season. The goal is for each athlete to bring in at least $100 to fully fund our season and meet our fundraising goals. There are many options for fundraising to help support the team this season and beyond. We use the funds each year to pay for meets, equipment, gear, and potential travel, as well as helping build funds for future years. Details for each fundraiser will come during the season.
Opportunities for fundraising this year:
● Sell raffle tickets and donuts
● Our first annual Run-a-Thon!
● Hosting an Aid Station at the Mayor’s Marathon in June
● Personal/ family donation
● Other opportunities will arise

Lettering Requirements:
In order to learn a Varsity Athletic Letter for Track and Field, an athlete must meet one of the following requirements:
- Earn at least 75 points on the season
- You can earn points by showing up to practice (1pt/ day) and by earning points in meets
- Four full years of team membership
- Participation in the State Championship Meet
- Letters may also be award by coaches discretion

What to bring to practice every day:
● WATER BOTTLE - we cannot overstate the importance of proper hydration. Athletes are expected to drink water throughout the day to avoid dehydration and injury. If you do not own a reusable water bottle, buy one.
● Healthy Snack - fruit and veggies, a granola bar, nuts, yogurt, sandwich, a sports drink. ● Shoes - you will not be able to run in street shoes, basketball shoes, sandals, crocs, slides, etc. You will need a pair of running shoes with proper laces and arch support. ● Warm Clothing/Layers - Between practices and meets, we will be outside A LOT and it’s often cold even when it’s sunny. Bring a hat/headband, gloves and easily removable layers every day. Distance runners will be practicing outside before the rest of the team and should be prepared to run outside.
● Digital Watch - Athletes will need to learn to keep track of their running pace and splits. Running with a phone in your hand is not acceptable. Affordable watches can be bought across the street at Target.

Health and Wellness:
This is an extremely important part of sport and of life. In order to have a successful season, all athletes must strive to make healthy choices for all aspects of their lives on a daily basis. This includes drinking lots of water; eating well (veggies, proteins, simple carbs); sleeping enough (extra sleep for repairing your mind and body); STRETCHING AND RECOVERING (active recovery aids in better performances); managing your time at school and practice; and making good choices for yourself and for your team.
